After Sue Bee was out of surgery and stable last Friday, we decided to make the best of what we had left in the day (it was also Adam’s birthday). We traveled up to Chimayo, New Mexico to visit a Catholic Sanctuary called, El Santuario de Chimayo. The sanctuary was stunning, and you could really feel the presence around you. Adam and I took a seat in the tiny sanctuary, and both gave our deepest thanks and gratitude for the last several days past, that day’s unfolding, and the weeks ahead of us.

Behind the sanctuary there was a small room that housed “el pocito” (“little well”), a small pit containing holy dirt. The dirt is said to have healed many people of ailments who took pilgrimages to that exact location. We’d been running away from the whirling dirt and dust of Santa Fe for days, and now here we were, bent over scooping dirt into our pockets and little containers. God had to have been laughing at us that day as we found ourselves hands deep in the dirt and dust – we were definitely laughing at ourselves.
