Toad Suck, Arkansas often appears on lists of places with unusual names, and that is a lot of the reason it caught our attention. Just outside Conway, AR and not too far from Little Rock, AR, Toad Suck offered us quiet camping and beautiful scenery.

We started the week a little further up the Arkansas River (pictured in Kristin’s last post), but we didn’t like our spot too much so we moved over to Toad Suck. We camped right next to the Toad Suck Ferry Lock and Dam, which was pretty cool. The Arkansas river is a marine highway, and about 2-3 times per day, huge river boats comes through the lock. The dam also churns up the water a good bit, so we got lulled to sleep every night by a sound similar to the sound the ocean makes when the waves roll in.

We were greeted by great sunrises several of the days, and it was nice to enjoy the morning coffee watching the sun rise over the river. The weather was fantastic, and we enjoyed a lot of time outdoors – Sue Bee especially enjoyed this.

We had planned to go into Little Rock one evening and see the sights, but it stormed that day so we decided to stay in and stay dry. Kristin cooked all of our meals this week, except for a trip to an absolutely fantastic taco spot: Tacos 4 Life. The menu included a ton of awesome tacos, including a couple of vegetarian ones that definitely made the cut.

We did get an opportunity to go for a drive through the country after the rains and take in some of the beautiful scenery.

We’re hitting the road again this afternoon, and we’ll post some more pictures!

  1. Suebee looks adorable. For some reason the boat pic and talks of the Arkansas river being a marine highway makes me think of the Gold rush and the steamboats in Dawson city. Very random but that’s what came to mind when I saw the scenery in the pics. The weather is beautiful and it looks like you were surrounded by meditative sounds. Tacos are always a winner ! Give suebee a hug for us.
