The wind in the National Forest started to pick-up a bit on Monday evening, and we went to sleep feeling the rocking and listening to subtle howls as the wind brushed up against the trailer. By Tuesday afternoon the wind was wild and we had seen several dust devils around our camping sight. After our tornado scare in Oklahoma, we kept jokingly referring to the dust devils as tornados and/or a terrible dust storm.

The best surprise accompanied all of that wind, though! After lunch, Adam said we were going outside for an activity. We braced ourselves for the swirling dust by covering our faces and he opened up the basement compartment of our trailer. Out came our kites! Holy moly I was beyond excited – I may have actually been giggling, and smiling, and jumping up and down with excitement all at the same time. A way to forget the wind, but totally embrace it at the same time.

Adam’s kite hasn’t had much air time because it’s a box kite and needs pretty strong wind to keep it afloat. Up there on the plateau, it really soared though! And, Adam just may have been as excited as me!

“With tuppence for paper and strings
You can have your own set of wings
With your feet on the ground
You’re a bird in a flight
With your fist holding tight
To the string of your kite
Oh, oh, oh!
Let’s go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let’s go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let’s go fly a kite!
When you send it flyin’ up there
All at once you’re lighter than air
You can dance on the breeze
Over ‘ouses and trees
With your fist ‘olding tight
To the string of your kite
Oh, oh, oh!
Let’s go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let’s go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Let’s go fly a kite!”
